Twitter Bias

While drinking vodka with a bunch of Russians, we got on the topic of the value of Twitter.  Me being an advocate and a tech junky, I chime in with my impression: Twitter is where I get up to the minute news and interesting links from people I respect in the tech industry.

The response I got:

“The reason you say the best minds in social media and technology are all on Twitter is because you have a Twitter bias.”

What my Russian friend meant by “Twitter bias” is that I have decided that if a person is not on Twitter, then they’re clearly not a leader in technology, and the reality is that a number of people worth listening to are not on Twitter and so Twitter should not be valued as high as I say.

While it’s true I can’t find people like Donald Knuth on Twitter, I still find a fair share of valuable information on Twitter.  The question stands, though…: if the Knuths of the world are not on Twitter, how do I find them? I’d like to hear their 140 character updates too, in whatever format it’s available.

Perhaps I’ll subscribe to CACM.
